Ask Adam EP9 - "Can You lose body fat and gain muscle at the same time?"

What's going on, guys!? Welcome to another episode of Ask Adam.

All right, this week's question was,

"Can I lose fat and gain muscle at the same time?"

The easy answer to this is, absolutely, you can.

The reason why is fat loss and being at a caloric deficiency are not mutually exclusive concepts. Gaining muscle and being at a caloric surplus surely are not mutually exclusive either. There are nuances within both of these ideals that can interconnect and make both happen at the same time if you know how.

See, coincidentally with gaining muscle and losing body fat the nuances are a lot of the same things:

  • Proper nutrition

  • Getting enough sleep

  • Balancing blood sugar

  • Mitigating stress

Now, on top of that, does it make it easier to be the caloric surplus?

Yeah, it can definitely make that train run faster across that track, and does being at a caloric deficit also help accelerate that?

Absolutely!

But that doesn't mean it can't be done without being mutually exclusive. Many times we gain muscle and lose fat at the same time, especially at the beginning of a fitness journey because we're putting our body under different forms of stress and then learning how to adapt to them.

That adaptation process may include adding muscle. That adaptation process also may include utilizing more fat to get you through your day as a source of energy and both of those things can absolutely happen.

Guys, I hope this helps out. If you have questions, I want to answer them!
